FAQ

Why give out free hugs?

Why not? A hug is a way to brighten someone’s day, to show acceptance and caring. It’s almost guaranteed to make anyone feel better than they did before the hug.

Where did this idea come from?

It was inspired by the Free Hugs Campaign started by Juan Mann. Information about that can be found at those links, or on Wikipedia.

Will I get in trouble / do I need a permit?

For small Free Hugs gatherings, permits are not needed from the City of Philadelphia since we are not officially a demonstration. Some parks do not allow solicitation though, which the cops seemed to think we were guilty of, despite the hugs being free (namely, Rittenhouse Square - no hugging there, although it is allowed on the sidewalk outside the park). Please just make sure you are not blocking any auto or pedestrian traffic.

The term “Demonstration” means a public assembly, a meeting or gathering, a rally or protest event, a political rally or event, a demonstration, speechmaking, marching, the holding of vigils or religious services, and all other like forms of conduct, the primary purposes of which is expressive activity or the communication or expression of views or grievances, that (1) is engaged in by more than 75 persons and the conduct of which has the effect, intent, or propensity to draw a crowd or onlookers, or (2) will occur upon any City street, sidewalk, or alley without compliance with the normal and customary traffic regulations or controls governing such places. The term “Demonstration” shall not mean the casual use of City Property which does not have an intent or propensity to draw a crowd or onlookers, or a residential block party governed by the Streets Department’s block party permitting process.

How do I get involved?

Simply show up at one of the listed events. Or use the contact page to send me a note. This site is currently run by one person but I have no intention of running all the events in Philly. I would love for people to step up and plan their own events. Just let me know about them so I can add them to the calendar and make it known to our announcement list when the event is happening. Another way to get involved is to join the announcement list so that you’ll know when events are happening. I’ll try to publicize them well in advance.

I’m under 18, can I still come?

Unfortunately not. We can not be responsible for minors. You might try arranging an event at your school (after talking to the people in charge of course) or with your parents.
